Our Financial Planning Process:

Data Driven, Fact Based and Historically Tested

Take a Deep Dive into our Planning Process Below

What does it mean to PLAN for retirement?

  • Most importantly, we start with goals. What do you want to do? When would you like to stop working? Where do you want to live? This is just scratching the surface on what our discovery process will uncover. No stone left unturned.
  • After we've determined what you'd like to achieve, next, we evaluate what you are currently doing to achieve it. We'll explore multiple alternatives, and make actionable recommendations on how to improve. Our goal is to make your plan better, whether that is retiring earlier or spending more, it is up to you.
  • Stress testing your retirement using both historical evaluations and Monte Carlo simulations will help us develop a plan that stands up through good times and bad.
  • Setting the proper expectations on market and economic performance will reduce your stress and allow you to focus on the important things in life.

How a typical financial adviser plans for retirement

  • They follow the 4% rule. You may have heard of it. Although it was great research at the time, it is over 25 years old. If your adviser is still using it, we can almost guarantee your spending plan is fatally flawed.

  • They plans for their clients to spend the same amount of money every year, with an increase for inflation. Does this even make sense? Fundamentally, and statistically, this is wrong. Do you think you will spend the same amount of money in your 80's, as you will in your 60's when you first retire and are traveling the world? We don't either.

  • They pick a portfolio based on risk tolerance rather than risk capacity and needs, and do not incorporate actual cash flows into the portfolio construction.

  • They choose an overly conservative withdrawal rate so they do not have to monitor your plan dynamically to maximize income. They rebalance quarterly, which is lazy.

How our retirement income planning works

  • We use industry leading technology, combined with historical stress tests to recommend withdrawal strategies that maximize income, while setting exact thresholds for pay increases and decreases.

  • We use goal-based planning along with actual retiree spending research data to develop realistic income plans, which dramatically increases spending in your younger years of retirement, when you want it the most.

  • We build a portfolio that actually incorporates your expected cash flows, minimizing the potential for income shortfalls or adjustments during market downturns.

  • We utilize trigger rebalancing vs. time based, adding exponential value to your nest egg over the course of your retirement.

  • We monitor your plan continuously with cutting edge technology, evaluating market conditions, inflation, taxes, your spending, and expected future expenses to keep your spending within the "guardrails."

There Is No Such Thing As A "Standard" Portfolio

  • Investment portfolios should never be one-size-fits-all. Portfolios should be customized to help you achieve your goals.

  • We start the process by assessing both your risk tolerance (how much risk you are comfortable with) and your risk capacity (how much risk you should take) to meet your goals. We evaluate your current investments, and make recommended changes to align your portfolio for what you are trying to achieve, within your comfort level.

  • We will build a low cost portfolio. We do not sell products or receive compensation for our investment choices. We explain every investment choice, as you should always know what you own, and WHY you own it.

  • Our investment recommendations may include ETFs, Mutual Funds Stocks, Annuities, Alternatives, Private Credit, Commodities, and more. As fiduciaries, our investment choices do not define our pay, so we choose the investments that are best for YOU.

  • As you get closer to retirement, we will implement the "Bucket Strategy," a portfolio design tactic creating withdrawal buckets based on time horizons, allowing optimal rebalancing and income withdraws during down markets.

Your Fair Share (No More)

  • How do we make smart tax choices? What can be done now, or in the future to minimize our tax burden?

  • Traditional, Roth, or a mix of both? What's the science behind Roth Conversions? Deciding the optimal balance is a complicated math problem that depends greatly on your future goals.

  • Required minimum distributions can be crippling, and the insane withdrawal requirements can drive you into unwanted tax brackets. Smart Roth conversions early in your life can save you multiple 5 and 6 figure amounts over the course of a lifetime.

  • Have a tax question throughout the year? We keep a tax firm on retainer to help guide our clients through the unknown.

  • If you're concerned about gift taxes, inheritance tax, or other wealth reducing impediments, we'll implement strategies to help your family retain more of it's wealth.

Let's Make Sure You're Covered

  • No one likes to think about things like disability or untimely death, but they do happen.

  • We don't sell insurance, so we have nothing to gain from our evaluation. We give you an honest assessment of what your family would need, along with recommendations, and let you decide what is best.

  • Our insurance strategies are often tapered, reducing your insurance coverage as you grow older (and grow wealth), ultimately saving you money.

  • We'll also assess your liability insurance and other employer offered benefits to ensure you are taking advantage of your benefits.

  • Long term care education and assessments show our clients what would happen to their wealth if the family was impacted by an expensive health situation. We'll show you ways to protect your nest egg from an undesired situation.

...

We Know Education Is Important...And Expensive

  • Student loans can be exhausting and stressful. We will help you develop a plan to lighten the burden on your finances caused by these liabilities.

  • If you want to help a loved-one save for their education, we can develop a plan based on your goals, and help you invest in proper tax-advantaged methods for their education.

  • The logistics of paying for college (FAFSA, loans, grants, etc) can be intimidating. Let us guide you through the process to ensure you are not missing opportunities.

Someone Will Decide Your Estate's Fate.

We Want It To Be YOU.

  • Ask anyone who has been through the probate process, or even worse, the process of dealing with a loss of someone with no will, and they will be the biggest advocate of a proper estate plan.

  • Most estate planning happens outside of a will, with the proper titling and beneficiary naming on accounts.

  • Wills still go through probate. A trust may be a better choice. Trusts are not just for the super rich, just the super smart.

  • Medical directives and financial power of attorneys could take immense pressure pressure and uncertainty off your loved ones.

  • Would you like to leave a legacy, control how assets are distributed at your passing, or donate some of your wealth to charity? Your estate plan can ensure your wishes are carried out...as YOU wish.
